Email Me!

I've been hearing a lot of great things in response to some of my blogs, but I would love to hear from all of you. So many of you are doing so much to live a more sustainable, compassionate life, and I want to hear all about it!

So, if you would be so kind, please email me (or use the comment function) and tell me the ways you're reducing your carbon footprint!

Example:

Hello Dearest Jess,

To start with, I've started composting and I love how much it's reduced my trash. Cause what is trash, anyway? It's just stuff bound for the landfill, and that ain't cool. Now that it's warm out, I turn off the water in my shower while I shampoo and soap up, which has saved me money off my water bill. I've been remembering to bring my canvas bags to the grocery store and never buy bottled water anymore, so I've really cut down my plastic consumption. With the savings from my bag credits from the grocery store and with the money I've saved not buying bottled water, I've been able to buy a lot more things organic.

Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, I've stopped eating eggs for breakfast and was able to go off my Lipitor, which has saved me a lot of money, some of which I've spent on hemp milk. I really love it because it tastes like melted vanilla ice cream! The rest of the money I've saved so far I spent on Smart Strips to reduce my phantom loads, but those have saved me money, too! I'm not sure what to do with all this extra money yet.

Ooh, you'll love this: I've cut out red meat from my diet (except roast beef on Christmas) and I've been eating vegetarian for 2 meals every day. Next week, I'm going to bump that up and only eat meat twice a week! And then on from there!! I already have more energy and better sex.

Thanks for asking me to do this. I feel good about thinking of all the things I'm doing, and it's helped me to see what more I can do. I'll be sure to update you as I add more things to this list and find other ways to reduce my footprint. By the way, you're wonderful.

Love,
So and so

Hello, Dearest Darling Jess ~

To start with, I've started looking into alternative milks. Since I’m allergic to soy milk and have tried rice milk and found it too watery, I tried almond milk. Love it. And chocolate almond milk if effin’ tasty! Hemp milk is a bit spendy (and I keep remembering how you described it as “grainy” -- ergh), but I swear I will try it one day. Now that it's warm out, I turn off the water in my shower while I shampoo and soap up, which has saved water. I've been turning off the water while I brush my teefs for a while now, so kudos to me. I remember to bring my canvas bags to the grocery store about half of the time (or more, now, so I’m improving!), and I have not bought bottled water for a long while now. Seltzer doesn’t count, right? It comes in cans, and I recycle. I love fizzy water.

Jenny and I went to worship this morning at Our Lady of Perpetual Zucchini (aka the farmers market)… Two older men admired my curvaceous posterior.

Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, I've been reducing my phantom loads for a while now, but I love the phrase “phantom loads,” so thanks for teaching me that!

Ooh, you'll love this: I've been managing to be about 70% vegetarian during the winter, but I will increase that to about 80-85% in the summer, thanks to Our Lady of Perpetual Zucchini. The egg thing…I’ll definitely buy them at OLoPZ. And if I must buy meat, I will look for local. Have I mentioned that I love quinoa? Gotta love quinoa… ahem.

Thanks for asking me to do this. I feel good about thinking of all the things I'm doing, and it's helped me to see what more I can do (like checking out the vegan baking sites). I'll be sure to update you as I add more things to this list and find other ways to reduce my footprint. By the way, you're talented, lovely, smart, and wonderful!

Love,

Your smart, wonderful, and doting Auntie Jan

Ditto the last comment, especially the last line. (I, too, am doing what I can) Everybody needs to know the information you provide--and so well and wittily written! Your blog needs to be recognized on a larger scale, so anybody that has ideas about this, let Jess know!

Hey, no fair dittoing! Plus, I know you don't worship at Our Lady of Perpetual Zucchini -- for one thing, Dad would never allow that much zucchini!

Jess,
OK, the transition to becoming greener was quite a bit easier after returning from NZ (that country is well on their way to getting it right) and being in Boulder now compared to, lets say Paoli, Indiana, well, it is easier.

Things Paul and I do now:
-biking more, driving a lot less
-showering together saves water, tag teaming the soap vs. rinse cycles (i must confess to being a wee bit more of a water pirate than he)
-use reusable shopping bags
-quit drinking milk, thanks to your pus blog
-switched from clay to renewable kitty litters
-hang dry our clothes to save energy and $$
-unplugging chargers after use, unplugging everything when out
-shopping for clothes at re-sell shops vs. new
-donating and recycling what we don't use vs. throwing away

For the record, though not being able to eat Zucchini myself for personal reasons, I am not opposed to others eating at Our Lady of Perpetual Zucchini. I pride myself on being tolerant of others, even in this sensitive area. Love the blog. Learning alot. Thanks for your efforts!

I, too, have personal reasons for resisting zucchini consumption. I wonder how many of us are out there suffering from this, thinking we were alone? I also consider myself a tolerant person and even allow others to eat zucchini in my presence. Not green peppers though. Those are just foul.
